What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care discipline based on the scientific premise that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism.

“Chiropractic” comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning “done by hand. Chiropractic also places an emphasis on nutrition and exercise, wellness and healthy lifestyle modifications. Central to the Chiropractic philosophy is that the nervous system supplies our organs and muscles with nutrients. The nervous system is protected by the spinal joints, so it is imperative that these joints are working well so as not to cause interference.

Correcting subluxations is paramount to restoring your body’s self-healing abilities.

Your nervous system is comprised of the brain, sense organs, spinal cord and all the nerves that branch out to every part of your body.  Via the central nervous system, your body controls functionality of every organ and every cell; it control s breathing, digestion, thought processes and motor movements.

Through adjustment of specific vertebrae, a chiropractor reduces irritations and disruptions to the nervous system.

    What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is a slight dislocation or misalignment of the vertebrae. These disturbances can cause irritation of the nerves and blood vessels which branch off from the spinal cord between the vertebrae.  This irritation may cause pain and dysfunction in muscle and organ tissue, as well as neurologic imbalance in the normal body processes.

    Subluxation

    What causes a subluxation?
Physical: Injuries, accidents, slips, falls, the birth process, prolonged 'abnormal' postures or even simple repetitive movements.

Mental and emotional: Upsets, arguments, personal traumas, work pressure, life or career changes.

Chemical: Toxins, additives and chemicals used in food production, cigarette smoking, medications and other pollutants in our environment.

What are the effects of subluxation?
Reduced spinal function: When your spine is storing a build-up of tension and subluxations, your natural mobility, flexibility and posture are affected. Your spine receives less nutrient supplies, its ability to absorb stress declines and additional pressure is placed on surrounding joints. This begins a process of spinal wear and tear 'degeneration'.

Spinal pain: Your spine's structure allows it to absorb a lot of pressure and stress, so subluxations can be present for years before pain of other symptoms begin. Through 'referred' pain you might notice the stress as headaches, leg and arm discomfort or pain in other areas. Pain typically surfaces, even after a seemingly small stress, when your spine simply can't absorb any more. Much like tooth decay, you don't often feel the symptoms until it's been progressing for some time.

Nervous system interference: Subluxations may reduce, alter or interfere with the flow of information throughout your nervous system, reducing your body's ability to coordinate its functions and adapt to changing requirements and stresses. Subluxations can have a dramatic effect on your health and wellbeing and may lead to a wide range of conditions from back pain and digestive problems to colic, asthma, learning difficulties and other mental and emotional symptoms.
