  • Which Massage Therapy

techniques do we utilise at Peak?

    Remedial Massage Therapy
Remedial Massage is defined as "the application of a range of physical modalities used in the assessment and treatment of muscular conditions, which cause myofascial pain and affect human movement". Put simply a Remedial Massage Therapist treats muscle and joint pain and dysfunction. Incorporating remedial massage therapy when required can help facilitate a faster and more complete recovery.

Our remedial massage therapists have all completed the required tertiary courses and have extensive practical knowledge of soft tissue injuries.

Remedial Massage Therapy is generally covered within the 'extras' of private health insurance companies and all of our therapists are registered to provide rebates.

    Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage utilises similar techniques to Swedish massage however the pressure will be more intense. This is a more localised treatment based on your body's individual needs. Your therapist will work on finding and releasing chronic muscle tension, knots and trigger points.

    Remedial Massage
Remedial massage can be helpful in treating specific areas of muscle tension and dysfunction caused by stress or injury. The therapy also helps to get the blood flowing to injured tissues to speed up the repair process. Remedial massage can also be used for relaxation and general wellbeing.

    Relaxation Massage
A relaxation massage is usually a full-body treatment involving soft music, soft lighting and aromatherapy oils. You will have a long, luxurious massage which will use all kinds of techniques including long strokes, gentle kneading and rolling of skin and muscle, and perhaps some rhythmic rocking from side to side.

    Pregnancy Massage
Pregnancy massage is massage therapy specifically tailored for the expectant mother's needs. The mother's body must be properly positioned and supported during the massage, using pillows and padding. Proper positioning ensures comfort and safety for the mother and baby.

Also, some massage techniques, such as deep tissue work, cannot be used. Certain areas of the body should be avoided during pregnancy.

    Cupping
Cupping is an ancient Chinese method of causing local congestion. A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This draws up the underlying tissues. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and localized healing takes place.

    Trigger Point Therapy
A trigger point is a hyperirritable spot that is painful. It is called a trigger point because it "triggers" a painful response. But a trigger point is more than a tender nodule. It affects not only the muscle where the trigger point is located, but also causes "referred pain" in tissues supplied by nerves.

Trigger points are located in a taut band of muscles fibers. The trigger point is the most tender point in the band. Your therapist will locate and deactivate them by applying pressure to these points to "deactivate" the trigger.

How often do I need a massage?

If you are also seeing the chiropractor this may be discussed in your treatment plan as a part of your overall health plan. Typically a massage once per month is recommended but this does not apply to everyone. Some people need massage more frequently, depending on their condition and the specific reason they are coming for massage therapy.
